Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, then line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat for about 2 minutes, gradually adding the boiling water until smooth.
  3. Divide the batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then invert onto wire racks.
  4. While cakes cool, prepare frosting: beat softened butter until fluffy, then gradually mix in powdered sugar and milk. Divide and color frosting for house colors.
