Description

Indulge in the buttery delight of homemade flaky croissants, a French pastry featuring rich flavor and airy texture. Perfect for breakfast or brunch, these croissants will impress anyone with their flaky exterior and soft interior.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter, divided
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk, warm water, and yeast. Let sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  3. Prepare the butter block by placing the remaining butter between parchment paper and rolling it into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Chill for 30 minutes.
  4. Roll out the chilled dough into a large rectangle. Place the butter block in the center and fold the dough over it. Roll out again and fold into thirds; repeat this process 3 more times, resting for 30 minutes between folds.
  5. Roll the dough into a large rectangle, cut into triangles, and roll from base to tip to shape the croissants. Place on a baking sheet and let rise for about 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C), brush with egg wash, and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

  • For the best texture, allow croissants to cool slightly before serving.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • Freeze any leftovers in a freezer-safe bag for longer storage.
  • Reheat in the oven for a few minutes to regain the flaky texture.
