Description

This Family Favorite Scalloped Potatoes recipe is a creamy, cheesy dream, perfect for any occasion. Tender potato slices, a rich sauce, and a golden topping make this baked potato casserole irresistible.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Layer half of the sliced potatoes and onions in the dish, then repeat with the remaining potatoes and onions.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk, salt, and pepper.
  4. Continue stirring until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Pour the creamy sauce evenly over the potatoes and onions in the baking dish.
  6. Sprinkle 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
  7. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and cheese is melted and golden brown.
  9. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a clove of minced garlic to the sauce while it’s thickening.
  • Use a mandoline for evenly sliced potatoes to ensure uniform cooking.
  • Experiment with different cheeses, such as Gruyere or Monterey Jack, for a unique twist.
  • If the top is browning too quickly, cover it loosely with foil during the last few minutes of baking.
  • Letting the scalloped potatoes rest for 10-15 minutes after baking helps the sauce thicken slightly, making it easier to serve.
